Joseph Irungu, commonly known as Jowie, voiced his frustrations in court on Tuesday January 14, 2025 over delays in receiving his trial record.
Irungu was convicted and sentenced to death in March 2024 for the murder of Monica Kimani.
He later filed a notice of appeal against the trial judge’s decision.
To proceed with the appeal, Irungu requires the trial record, which includes a detailed account of the trial, the judge’s notes, the judgment, and other relevant documents.
“It’s been nearly a year, and he still hasn’t received the record,” said Irungu’s lawyer, Andrew Muge.
Despite efforts to contact court administrators, the records have not been provided.
Irungu’s legal team requested the court’s help to obtain the necessary documents to move forward with the appeal.
The victim’s advocate representing Monica’s family agreed, stressed the importance of obtaining the record but also requested the release of some items still in custody.
Jowie’s lawyer opposed the release of these items, stating that they are exhibits and their inclusion in the appeal record is uncertain.
The court scheduled a mention for January 28 to confirm the status of the trial record.
Monica Kimani was found murdered in her Nairobi home on September 19, 2018, with her throat slit.
The trial judge noted the severity of the crime, citing how the murder was planned and executed with precision, not an act of provocation or self-defense.
