Kenyans under Jua Kali Sector to own homes under Affordable Housing Program

The Government through Affordable Housing Board (AHB) has committed its support to the Jua Kali sector in owning homes under the Affordable Housing Program (AHP).

While speaking at a consultative session in Nairobi, the Affordable Housing Board Chairman Jeremiah Simu, said they will conduct sensitisation campaigns across Kenya to woo more Jua Kali artisans to express their interest of owning houses through their associations’ leadership.

“We are committed to supporting the sector in acquiring homes under the Affordable
Housing program, which is why we have developed a framework for working with Jua Kali sector members. Our goal is to reach out to the public, including the informal sector, in
response to their call for homeownership opportunities,” he said.

This initiative which is currently ongoing across the country, is part of the government’s broader plan to provide dignified housing across the country.

Speaking during the meeting, the Kenya National Federation of Jua Kali Associations Chief Executive Officer, Richard Muteti, acknowledged the invitation by Affordable Housing Programme Board Chairperson Jerry Simu. He emphasized that the collaboration moving forward is designed to educate members of the sector on housing opportunities and how they can begin their journey towards homeownership.

“I am here to honor the chairperson’s call after he reached out to actualize the dream of homeownership for the informal sector, which Jua Kali is part of. Beyond being stakeholders contributing to the Affordable Housing Program, we are also actively involved in developing and constructing the houses through our various skilled manpower. That is why we are hereto ensure significant support for this initiative. I will inform my members so they can become homeowners. We have successfully referenced the programme, and now we need to ensure more people take advantage of it,” said Muteti.

The government has assured that every eligible individual, regardless of the level of income, can access the programme, with over 24 of the planned housing projects in the region nearing completion.
