“I remember our house in Nairobi where dad lived while we were in ‘ushago’, and the smell of medication. While in class six, my dad was in and out of the hospital,” the mother of one narrated.

Sadly, her father’s condition quickly declined, and he was admitted to the hospital once more. On one fateful Saturday, her mother took her and her siblings to visit him at the hospital.

Nyawira explained that she never saw her father alive again, and was surprised to find mourners gather at their home setting up the infamous tent during a wake.

To date, Abel Mutua’s wife suspects her father died on Sunday although their mother kept it under wraps.

Their mother was left with four children with barely enough to survive on.

“By the time my dad passed away, my mum was 36 years old, with four kids to take care of. This is where life began. Imagine 36; she was so young, oh my God!” Nyawira exclaimed.

Days after they laid their father to rest, their paternal in laws allegedly kicked them out of their home aiming to sell the property.

“My dad had a bit of money in the bank, around 2 million. A month after we buried our dad, the in-laws came to knock, being led by my paternal grandmother and her eldest kids. They wanted his property,” she added.

The real cause of death

Years later, Nyawira met the doctor who treated her late father and had a conversation that led to revelation about her father’s cause of death.

“The doctor asked me if I knew what had killed my dad. I was a bit shocked because I knew it was a stroke. The doctor said he had a stroke, but he also had something else, he told me to ask my mum about it when I was old enough.”

She later found out he was diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. Apparently, her father’s relatives accused the mother of infecting with the killer disease.

“Just to be clear, my mum has never had AIDS.”

My relatives from my dad’s side accused my mum of infecting my dad with HIV. They alleged they had come to remove my mum who they referred to as a ‘prostitute’ from the home,” Nyawira added.

Judy’s mother had to start over, accepting a job earning a pitiful KSh200 per day as a casual laborer.
