Junior Starlets dominate Uganda to advance in FIFA U-17 World Cup Qualifiers

Kenya’s Junior Starlets delivered a stunning performance at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, defeating Uganda 3-0 to secure a spot in the third round of the FIFA U-17 World Cup qualifiers. With this victory, the Kenyan side advanced with a commanding 5-0 aggregate win, having beaten Uganda 2-0 in Kampala the previous week.

A Fast Start

The Junior Starlets wasted no time asserting dominance. Patience Asiko opened the scoring in the 4th minute with a calm and composed finish. This early goal set the tone for the match as Kenya controlled the tempo throughout the first half, despite Uganda’s impressive possession.

Second Half Surge

In the second half, head coach Mildred Cheche made strategic substitutions, introducing Mwanakombo Bakari, Brenda Achieng, and Joan Ogola to strengthen the attack. The move paid off in the 86th minute when Achieng doubled Kenya’s lead after a brilliant assist from Joyangela Valencia. Achieng sealed the emphatic victory with her second goal in stoppage time, bringing the final score to 3-0.

Impressive Stats

  • Shots on target: Kenya 8, Uganda 3
  • Possession: Uganda 55%, Kenya 45%
  • Pass accuracy: Kenya 82%, Uganda 78%
  • Corner kicks: Kenya 5, Uganda 4
  • Fouls committed: Kenya 12, Uganda 9

Despite Uganda’s higher possession, they struggled to create meaningful chances in the final third, which was their major downfall.

Coach and Captain’s Reactions

Head Coach Cheche praised the team’s effort and unity, stating, “Winning away in the first leg gave us confidence, and today we secured another three points. Our teamwork has been crucial to our success.”

Team captain Halima Imbachi echoed her coach’s sentiments: “We are happy with the win and grateful for the support from fans and coaches. We are ready to face Cameroon in the next round.”

Looking Ahead

Kenya’s Junior Starlets will now face Cameroon, who progressed after defeating Ethiopia 6-3 on aggregate. With their impressive form and growing confidence, the Junior Starlets aim to qualify for their second consecutive FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, having previously competed in the Dominican Republic.

The Kenyan squad is eager to make history once again and will rely on their strong teamwork and tactical prowess to overcome Cameroon in the upcoming round.
