Junior Starlets secure 3-1 win over Dominican Republic U17 in final World Cup warm-up

The Junior Starlets delivered an outstanding performance, defeating the Dominican Republic U17 team 3-1 in their final friendly match on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at the Centro Español ground. This victory serves as a confidence boost as the Kenyan side wraps up their preparations for the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.

The match began with a slight setback for Kenya when the Dominican Republic found the back of the net in the 19th minute, taking an early 1-0 lead. However, the celebration was short-lived. Just six minutes later, Valerie Nekesa demonstrated her attacking prowess, scoring a brilliant equalizer in the 25th minute to level the game at 1-1.

The Junior Starlets, now with momentum on their side, continued their relentless pressure. In the 31st minute, Marion Serenge executed a determined run through the Dominican defense, capping it with a clinical finish to give Kenya a 2-1 lead just before halftime.

In the second half, Kenya’s dominance persisted. After a series of relentless attacks, the third goal came in a chaotic but determined fashion. Jane Kweyu took a powerful shot that deflected off Joan Ogola, forcing the Dominican Republic keeper into a save. However, the ball fell perfectly to Lindey Weey Atieno, who coolly slotted it home to secure a 3-1 victory for the Junior Starlets.

This match marked the last friendly for the Junior Starlets before they embark on their FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup journey, which begins on October 16, 2024, and runs through to November 3, 2024. The team is set to face stiff competition, opening against England on October 18, followed by matches against Korea DPR on October 20, and concluding the group stage against Mexico on October 24, 2024.
