Kabogo Pushes Telco Companies To Pay Kenyans for bad network

Former Kiambu Governor and ICT Cabinet Secretary nominee William Kabogo has unveiled his plans to tackle the persistent issue of call drops by major telecommunication providers.

Consequently, the said plan also included telco giant Safaricom if he should be confirmed for the position.

Kabogo’s remarks came in response to questions posed during his parliamentary vetting session.

The question was seeking clarification on the revenue assurance systems Kabogo would implement, potentially through the Communications Authority (CA).

These systems are geared to ensure transparency in data usage, call durations, and services provided by telecommunication companies like Safaricom and Airtel.

He also also highlighted concerns about frequent call drops, noting that customers rarely receive compensation for these disruptions.

Kabogo On Compensation For Call Drops

In his address, Kabogo emphasized the need for robust regulatory frameworks and legislative measures to curb call drop issues and ensure accountability from telecommunication companies.

“Regulatory frameworks and legislative tools are crucial to addressing how big tech companies exploit African countries, particularly with issues like frequent call drops,” Kabogo stated.

Drawing from personal experience, Kabogo added, “I have encountered numerous call drops while using Safaricom. When you reach out to them, they often blame technological glitches, frequency challenges, or other excuses.”

He pledged to prioritize the enforcement of accountability, stating, “This issue must become a thing of the past.”

“We need access to call logs to monitor the frequency of call drops and hold companies accountable for compensating customers affected by these failures,” Kabogo stated.

He also addressed the contentious matter of data bundle expirations, vowing to push for reforms in this area if appointed as Cabinet Secretary.

“These are critical issues affecting millions of Kenyans, and I am committed to addressing them effectively,” Kabogo affirmed.

The nominee appeared before the parliamentary committee tasked with vetting President William Ruto’s appointees, where his plans for improving the ICT sector were closely scrutinized.
