Buhkungu Stadium has been designated to host the 2024 Africa Nations Championships (CHAN) set for September this year.
This was decided following a meeting between sports cabinet secretary Ababu Namwaba and Kakamega Governor Fernandez Barasa.
In the meeting, the two leaders agreed on strategies to ensure the readiness of the Stadium by June.
Kenya alongside her East African Neighbours Uganda and Tanzania won the bid to co-host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), subject to successful stadium inspections.
In September the East African neighbours were awarded the rights to stage the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations which will be the first time in history that three countries will deliver the continental showpiece.
The East African nations Pamoja bid to beat Senegal, Botswana and Algeria, however, Algeria withdrew their candidacy.
Kenya had fronted improvements and renovation of Nyayo Stadium, Kasarani Stadium and Kipchoge Keino Stadium.
Kenya has previously been mentioned as a potential host for the prestigious competition; however, the nation’s hosting rights for the 2018 edition were eventually revoked due to infrastructure deficiencies.
