Kakamega Homeboyz’s journey in the CAF Confederation Cup came to an end during the preliminary round as they faced a decisive 4-1 loss against Libya’s Al Hilal in Benghazi on Sunday night.
Despite being the champions of the Kenyan FKF Cup, Homeboyz found themselves regretting missed opportunities from the first leg in Nairobi the previous weekend, which resulted in a goalless draw.
Al Hilal capitalized on their home advantage in Benghazi with an aggressive approach.
Nigerian player Ifeanyi Eze was a standout performer, securing a brace for Al Hilal. Andoh Kelvin and Osama Belaid each contributed a goal, propelling the Libyan team to the next round.
Eze initiated the scoring in the 13th minute with a skilful strike from beyond the penalty area, capitalizing on Al Hilal’s strong start. Belaid swiftly doubled their lead after 10 minutes with a well-executed freekick from long range, as Homeboyz struggled to match their opponent’s performance.
In the 30th minute, Eze completed his brace by defeating Homeboyz’s goalkeeper Faruk Shikhalo at the near post, effectively sealing the victory for Al Hilal and presenting Homeboyz with a substantial challenge.
Moses Mudavadi managed to secure a consolation goal for Homeboyz, but it proved insufficient to salvage their difficult away match.
The second half painted a similarly grim picture for Homeboyz, as Andoh’s goal served as the final blow, confirming their defeat and extinguishing their aspirations in the tournament.
