Kakamega student collapses, dies after marathon race

Police in Kakamega County are investigating an incident in which a Form Four student from St. Charles Lwanga Secondary School in Lugari, Kakamega County, collapsed and died after taking part in a school marathon race.

The 20-year-old Timothy Akila died while receiving treatment at Chekalini Hospital on Monday February 19, 2024.

He had been rushed there after collapsing in the stadium while participating in a school marathon competition.

According to his father, Fred Amugunya, he had spoken to his son before he left home for school, and he was just fine.

“I spoke to him in the morning, and he told me he was going for the school games. I left to run my errands as he went for the games,” said Amugunya.

He further stated that he later received a call informing him that his son had passed away.

“I don’t know what really happened. I just received a call asking me to rush home, that my son is dead,” he added.

The family now wants the police to hurry in the investigation of the incident.

According to the area chief, Julius Mpapale, parents and teachers should be aware of the students’ health status, especially those participating in sports, to prevent such cases.
