A small-scale businesswoman in Kakamega County reportedly died by suicide on Tuesday, October 1 after allegedly losing KSh60,000 in a gambling spree.

The Kambiri area chief, while speaking to the press, disclosed that the woman was found dead inside her shop in Kakamega town. According to a customer who had interacted with the deceased shortly before her passing, the woman appeared troubled while serving her, raising concern.

“I visited her shop, and she seemed fine at first. We had a good conversation, but as we continued talking, something felt off. Later, I learned that she had taken her own life,” the customer recounted.

Another witness revealed that the woman had been involved in gambling for some time, frequently using her phone to place bets. It was during one of these instances that she lost KSh60,000. However, instead of seeking help, she kept the loss to herself, which may have contributed to her tragic end.

The area chief urged residents to speak out when facing difficulties, emphasizing the importance of seeking help to prevent such unfortunate incidents.

He also confirmed that police had launched an investigation, with the body of the deceased taken to the mortuary for a postmortem.

“I appeal to all residents of Kambiri to reach out for help when dealing with personal problems. Don’t suffer in silence, speak to your neighbors or seek support,” said the chief. “While investigations are ongoing, we hope to uncover more details surrounding the incident.”
