Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka should come out clearly and denounce the Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya Coalition, if he wants Kenyans to take him seriously.

Political analyst Josphat Kamanya says that Kalonzo — who has been labelled a watermelon for supposedly being politically ‘indecisive’ — has so far lived up to this tag.

In the wake of the Gen Z anti-government protests in June 2024, President William Ruto — in a bid to survive — forged a handshake with ODM Party leader Raila Odinga, and proceeded to form a broad-based government.

According to Kamanya, by virtue of ODM Party, a cardinal constituent of Azimio, closing ranks with President Ruto and even allowing some of its members to be appointed to Cabinet, it technically meant that the opposition coalition was in bed with the government of the day.

‘Kalonzo flip-flopping’

Therefore, Kamanya is of the opinion that if Kalonzo was genuine and stood on his ideologies, he could have started the process of exiting Wiper from the coalition.

“Kalonzo Musyoka has remained very indifferent, ambivalent, just on the fence. Azimio [ODM] joined the Kenya Kwanza Gov’t. Kalonzo is criticising the Gov’t yet he is still a senior Azimio co-principal. On the other side, he is supporting the Gen Z revolution. So where is he? Why hasn’t Wiper Party walked out of Azimio Coalition?” Kamanya posed, in an interview with TV47’s Fred Indimuli on Wednesday, January 29.

Kamanya says that he will excuse Narc Kenya Party leader Martha Karua and her DAP-Kenya counterpart Eugene Wamalwa, who have already started the process of formally pulling out of Azimio coalition, citing betrayal by ODM.

The impeached Rigathi Gachagua is not a leader of any opposition in Kenya. He is trying so hard to join the opposition, but the opposition of the country are the people of Kenya who went to the streets in June 2024. – Kamanya

‘We don’t trust Gachagua’

Kamanya also watered down the recent alliance between Kalonzo, Karua, Wamalwa and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

According to Kamanya, Gachagua is only pointing out the ills of Kenya Kwanza Government because he is bitter following his impeachment from office.

“Rigathi Gachagua is like a jilted lover. He is still angry because President William Ruto orchestrated his impeachment. The ills of Kenya Kwanza Gov’t he is talking about did not start today. Those ills were going on even when he was in office for two years. We cannot trust Gachagua with power.”
