Kamala Harris leads Trump in early poll after Biden drops out

Vice President Kamala Harris is narrowly leading former President Donald Trump in a recent national presidential poll.

Marking one of the first significant surveys since President Joe Biden announced he would not seek re-election.

According to the Reuters/Ipsos poll released Tuesday, Harris holds a slim two-point advantage over Trump, with 44 percent support compared to Trump’s 42 percent.

The poll was conducted in the two days following Biden’s Sunday announcement, where he endorsed Harris.

Last week, Harris and Trump were tied at 44 percent each.

Now, Harris, 59, is the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination, gaining endorsements, donations, and pledged delegates at a rapid pace.

Despite her momentum, she trails Trump, 78, slightly in another poll released on the same day.

Both polls fall within their respective margins of error, indicating a highly competitive race.

These surveys come on the heels of the Republican National Convention, where Trump officially accepted the party’s nomination and Biden’s unexpected exit from the race.

Harris’s recent surge in the polls is attributed to the excitement among Democratic voters following the shakeup in the race.

Her ability to neutralize the typical post-convention bounce that candidates receive highlights her strong position.

In a PBS News/NPR/Marist poll conducted Monday, Trump leads Harris by a narrow margin of 46 % to 45% among registered voters, with 9% undecided.

When third-party candidates or independents are included, Trump and Harris are tied at 42 percent, with other candidates trailing far behind.

Trump during a rally

Notably, the PBS News survey found that 87 per cent of Americans believe Biden’s decision to step down was the right move.

The sentiment is shared across political and generational lines.

Harris vs Trump

A significant portion of respondents, 41%, feel Biden’s decision improves the Democrats’ chances of winning in November.

While 24% think it decreases their odds, and 34 per cent believe it makes no difference.

These polls also come in the aftermath of a shocking assassination attempt on Trump at a Pennsylvania rally on July 13.

Despite this, Trump maintains a slight edge of 1.6 percentage points over Harris.

This is according to an average of polls compiled by RealClearPolitics.

As the race progresses, both candidates will continue to vie for support in a highly divided electorate.

With Harris making significant strides and Trump holding onto a narrow lead.

The stage is set for a closely contested election come November.
