Kanjos on the spot after viral video of hawker’s crying child locked in their vehicle

The Nairobi City County Government has come under sharp criticism after a video showing a child of a female hawker locked inside a vehicle by county enforcement officers (askaris) surfaced.

In the undated video that has since gone viral, the county askaris (popularly known as kanjos) are seen confiscating the hawkers stock, locking them together with the woman’s child inside their vehicle.

However, a county council askari is also heard claiming that it is the female hawker herself that placed the child in the vehicle, in a bid to have her merchandise released.

Both the female hawker and her child are heard screaming, in the video that occurred along Tom Mboya Street. Their screams attract a crowd of pedestrians who force a female kanjo to free the child.

The Nairobi County Government is yet to respond to the video.
