Karen Nyamu joins Joho in demanding respect for government, warns against insults

Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu has joined Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho in calling for an end to insults directed at the Kenya Kwanza administration.

In an interview with Billy Miya and Mbaruk Mwalimu on ‘Maskani47’, Senator Nyamu said unsavoury attacks on social media against the government are unjustified.

Nyamu asserted that any critique of President William Ruto or government initiatives should be constructive and not hinder the delivery of services.

She highlighted that the administration was legitimately elected and should be afforded ample time to fulfil pledges made during the 2022 campaign.

“Wakenya wawe na subira na hii serikali. Ni nini kila saa matusi mtandaoni? Tulieni. Chezeni chini. Mpatie hii serikali time. Ni serikali yenu. Hakuna cha eti kwamba raisi yuko na serikali yake mahali. Ni yetu sote. Tuwe wazalendo. Tujenge nchi yetu,” said Nyamu.

The senator went on to call upon Kenyans to demonstrate patriotism and remain alert against incitement directed at the presidency, as well as communities.

“Kumkosoa ni sawa kabisa kwa kuwa nyinyi ndio waajiri. Lakini sio kwa kupinga kila kitu, eti hatutaki hiki wa kile, ilihali kinafanywa kwa ajili yetu. Tusikubali kuchochewa. Hatuna nchi nyingine, ni hii tu,” adviced Nyamu.

Nyamu’s sentiments come a day after Joho defended government initiatives against critics, vowing to face social media trolls head-on.

While on a development tour in Taita Taveta on Monday, CS Joho labelled social media trolls as unpatriotic, warning that they must desist or face retaliation.

“I want to tell the young people, nchi haiwezi pelekwa namna hiyo. Unakaa kwa mtandao, unakosa uzalendo. Wengine wanasema Raila Odinga aanguke African Union. How unpatriotic can you be as Kenyans that even one of your own ako na nafasi ya kuongoza pahali pazuri, kwa sababu ya kisiasa ya kizembezembe, mnaanza kusema he must fall? We will come for you my friend,” warned Joho.

However, the remarks by the former Governor of Mombasa were dismissed by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who urged Kenyans to stand firm against intimidation.

Sifuna emphasized that the Bill of Rights safeguards freedom of expression and announced that Joho would be summoned to clarify his statements.
