Azimio co-principals Martha Karua and Kalonzo Musyoka are involved in a fresh tussle over the newly formed ‘Kamwene’ faction.
The two leaders have been battling for the 2027 Azimio presidential ticket if their political moves are anything to go by.
On Tuesday, Kalonzo Musyoka- leader Wiper Democratic Movement, opined that the Kamwene faction is a lost cause and should be done away with.
“Kamwene is a terrible individualistic political policy. It is dead on arrival. I would advise my friends to abandon it, and we should stick together,” he was quoted as saying.
The faction is led by NARC-Kenya party leader Martha Karua, alongside Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, former governors Ndiritu Muriithi (Laikipia) and Peter Munya (Meru), and university don Gitile Naituli.
They officially launched the group in October last year “to champion the interests of the vote-rich Mt Kenya region.”
In her response, Karua posed, “What about kamwene scares my brother Kalonzo Musyoka that he must drag it in every conversation he has?”
Prof Makau Mutua slams Kamwene
This is however not the first time that the Mt Kenya caucus is facing criticism within the Azimio coalition.
In early December, Azimio Spokesperson Prof. Makau Mutua launched a scathing attack against the forum.
Prof. Mutua said that by forming ‘Kamwene’, which some Kenyans and political pundits have described as a splinter group from Azimio, the said leaders have exhibited their selfishness.
“KAMWENE means the “selfish ones.” Or “mine” and “mine alone.” That’s how you RETARD an African post-colonial state. Can salvation come from the primeval?” Prof. Mutua posed on X, formerly Twitter.
However, on several occasions, Karua insisted that formation of Kamwene did not point to a fallout within the Uhuru-Raila led coalition.
“It does not mean we are not in Azimio, if we weren’t we would say it without beating around the bush.
“You saw us speak as Azimio, today we are here speaking as Kamwene, tomorrow I will speak as Narc-Kenya, all these are spaces we occupy,” Karua said during its launch in October.
