Karua sounds alarm in Tanzania: ‘Justice for Tundu Lissu now!’

Renowned Kenyan Senior Counsel and political leader Martha Karua has raised international concern over what she describes as “deeply troubling violations” in the trial of Tanzanian opposition figure, Tundu Lissu.

Karua, currently in Tanzania as the Convenor of the Pan-African Progressive Leaders Solidarity Network, condemned the handling of Lissu’s legal proceedings, saying it undermines both Tanzania’s Constitution and international human rights norms.

“I’m in Tanzania today witnessing concerning developments in Hon. Tundu Lissu’s case,” Karua said in a statement. “His legal team has officially protested the improper virtual court hearing. We join them to demand that Hon. Lissu appear physically in court — transparency and open justice are non-negotiable principles.”

The opposition leader, a key member of the CHADEMA party, is reportedly being detained under questionable circumstances. According to Karua, Lissu’s arrest has been marked by arbitrary detention, denial of access to his family and legal counsel, and violent clampdowns on journalists and CHADEMA supporters attempting to attend court sessions.

“These actions are not only unconstitutional, they are inhumane,” Karua emphasized.

Eyewitness accounts from Dar es Salaam report chaotic scenes outside the courtroom, with police using excessive force to disperse peaceful supporters and media personnel. Rights groups and democracy advocates across the continent are now closely watching the case, calling it a test of Tanzania’s commitment to democratic norms ahead of the October 2025 elections.

Karua outlined four key demands:

  1. Immediate release of Tundu Lissu and the dropping of all politically motivated charges
  2. Restoration of CHADEMA’s eligibility in the 2025 elections
  3. Implementation of electoral reforms
  4. Respect for constitutional rights and due process

“The struggle for democracy continues,” Karua declared, urging the international community and civil society to stand in solidarity with Lissu and the broader fight for democratic reforms in Tanzania.

The Tanzanian government has yet to issue an official response to the growing international outcry. However, with pressure mounting, the case is poised to become a flashpoint in the region’s broader push for political accountability and rule of law.

IStandWithLissu is now trending on social media, signaling a continent-wide call for justice — and eyes remain fixed on Tanzania
