People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has called on Kenyans to break with tradition and elect a woman as President in the upcoming 2027 General Election, arguing that male leadership since independence has failed to equitably distribute the country’s resources.
Speaking during a surprise appearance at a wedding ceremony in Kambi Garba, Isiolo, Karua emphasised the need for a leadership shift, one that brings a more inclusive and compassionate approach to governance. She likened national leadership to managing a household, stating that “a mother ensures everyone is fed, whether there is plenty or little.”
Karua, who was Raila Odinga’s running mate under the Azimio coalition in the 2022 elections, confirmed her intention to vie for the presidency in 2027 on a PLP ticket.
She passionately appealed to Kenyans to support her bid, promising a leadership style that prioritises equity, fairness, and grassroots engagement.
She said its time Kenyans considered what a woman can do at the helm. “The national cake hasn’t been shared fairly for far too long,” Karua told the gathered crowd.
Her visit to Isiolo was warmly received by residents, including local elders Hassan Okicha and Abdi Abdullahi, who praised her for engaging with the community outside the typical political season.
Karua’s call continues to ignite a broader conversation about gender and leadership in Kenya.
