A police officer was assaulted by a driver while on duty along Kamiti Road at Mirema Junction.
The incident, reported from the Kasarani Traffic Base, occurred at approximately 8:00 a.m.
The officer who was controlling traffic, noticed a vehicle making an illegal U-turn, causing obstruction to other road users.
As the officer approached the vehicle to address the violation, the driver hit the road kerb, causing the car to get stuck.
The officer managed to enter the vehicle’s front passenger seat and instructed the driver to head to the police station for further action.
However, the situation took a dangerous turn when the vehicle reached a point opposite Quick Mart.
The driver suddenly stopped the car, drew a sword from under the seat, and attempted to attack the officer.
In a bid to protect himself, the officer jumped out of the vehicle. The driver followed, assaulting him with blows and kicks.
During the scuffle, the officer fell into a trench, and the assailant seized his police pocket phone battery before fleeing the scene.
Members of the public quickly intervened.
Rescuing the officer and taking him to Crestview Mother and Child Wellness Centre in Kasarani for first aid.
Due to the severity of his injuries, he was subsequently referred to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital for further treatment.
The police have since apprehended one accomplice, identified as Peter Kiragu, who is currently in custody.
Efforts to trace the motor vehicle and the primary suspect are ongoing.
Recently, police officers have been attacked by people while in the line of duty.
Kasarani Police Department is urging anyone with information about the whereabouts of the suspect or the vehicle involved to come forward.
