Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot has underscored the need for a new bill that will guide the process of naming key public installations.

His sentiment comes after Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza sparked an online debate by naming a county road after he husband, Murega Baichu.

The lawmaker says that Governor Kawira has followed in an “ugly” path taken by Kenya’s first president Jomo Kenyatta and his successor Daniel Arap Moi, who named public institutions and infrastructure after themselves.

“Kawira Mwangaza has simply followed in the ugly path taken by our nation’s founding fathers. I think we need a public nomenclature bill to guide the process of naming of Key public installations. Just not sure whether to start in 1963 or 2023,” Senator Cheruiyot says.

Mwangaza on Saturday, September 2 posted photos of the rehabilitated road with the caption “Murega Baichu Road”.

Rehabilitation of the road which is in Nyaki West Ward, Imenti North Constituency, started a week ago.

But 2027 presidential hopeful Saitabao ole Kanchory says that Senator Cheruiyot is in a position of power and should oversee changes in the naming process.

“Hey [Aaron Cheruiyot], you’re in power and nothing is stopping the government from revisiting the naming process to before Kenya was colonized.

“Why Lake Victoria, Thomson Falls, Lake Alice etc.? We can rename our roads, parks, rivers, and mountains with more deserving heroes. Do it!”
