Sergeant John Kimani Muturi, a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer who allegedly killed a 74-year-old-old civilian on Christmas Day in Bahati, Nakuru County, will be held in custody for five more days.
A Nakuru court on Saturday, December 28 granted the prosecution’s prayers to allow for the conclusion of their investigations.
The prosecution, through Jackson Okeyo, had, however, sought to hold the military officer for 14 days, arguing that he was a flight risk.
On the fateful day, Muturi and his wife were among the revelers who having drinks at the Githoro Police Station canteen pub. An altercation ensued when the deceased (Maurice Gachanja) reportedly complimented the officer’s wife.
In the ensuing melee, the KDF officer — based at Isiolo barracks — picked a blunt object and hit the man. Police officers who heard the commotion rushed to the scene, but found Gachanja unconscious.
He was rushed to Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital but succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment.
Bahati Sub-County Police Commander Lilies Wachira says the CCTV footage from the canteen has been obtained to be reviewed, for purposes of establishing the circumstances that led to the altercation.
