Two individuals, one being a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier, were shot and wounded during a confrontation with bandits in a village in Baringo County.
Reports indicate the incident occurred on Saturday May 25, along the Moinonin Loruk section in Baringo.
Around mid-morning, approximately 100 armed bandits raided a village near the Moinonin IDP camp, stealing over 140 goats from eight local families.
Witnesses reported that the gang initially attacked a village, causing harm to a woman. Additionally, the police team that arrived at the scene was also met with resistance.
The armed bandits then clashed with a military patrol team, causing injuries to one soldier. Witnesses described the group as well-organized and determined in their actions.
While one faction engaged the security forces, another group made off with the stolen animals.
During the peaceful period following the previous attacks, individuals who had been displaced due to insecurity in the region had began to return to their homes, unfortunately the bandits struck this time, causing further turmoil.
After the attack, the KDF responded by deploying three helicopters in the area. Two choppers pursued the attackers, while the third airlifted the injured officer.
Subsequently, military gunship aircraft targeted the bandit’s hideouts with missiles and bombs. The outcome in terms of causalities remains unclear.
Locals mentioned that the bandits were seen surveying the area the day before the attack. Despite reporting this to the police, no action was taken.
The region is facing banditry issues amidst ongoing operations. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki had taken charge of the security operations in the area, promising to eradicate banditry.
