The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) has announced a significant increase in the cost of DNA testing services for the year 2025.

The institution confirmed the price adjustment in a statement released on Wednesday, January 8, citing various operational factors that have necessitated the change.

Effective immediately, the cost of a DNA test will rise by KSh7,000, bringing the new fee to KSh27,000.

This adjustment represents a substantial jump from the previous charge of KSh20,000, which had remained unchanged for several years.

“We wish to inform our valued customers of a marginal price adjustment for the DNA Testing Service from Ksh20,000 to Ksh27,000 starting this January 2025,” the statement read.

DNA testing has become an essential service in Kenya, often utilized for determining paternity, resolving inheritance disputes, and providing evidence in legal cases.

KEMRI’s facilities are among the most trusted in the country, making this announcement impactful to many Kenyans who rely on these services.

DNA testing is currently only required for court-ordered paternity tests or as part of criminal investigations.

DNA home test kits that cost KSh600 were introduced to the Kenyan market in 2023, igniting a discussion about their safety and accuracy.

The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) even cautioned Kenyans against using them, stating that they had not been authorised to be sold in Kenya.

“It has been brought to the attention of the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) that unauthorised home DNA test kits are being marketed on digital platforms for retail in the Kenyan market.

“Please note that the PPB has not authorised any retailer to sell such kits and hereby appeals to the public to be on the lookout for retailers marketing these Kits.” The statement read.
