KeNHA announces closure of Nakuru-Eldoret highway

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) on Thursday May 2, 2024 announced the closure of Nakuru-Eldoret highway at Timboroa Market.

In a statement, KeNHA noted that the highway was closed after destruction by floods that left a section of the road showing signs of a possible collapse.

The government agency warned road users against using the affected section of the highway for safety reasons.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority regrets to notify the public of the closure of Nakuru – Eldoret (A8) Road at Timboroa Market.

“This follows the destruction by storm water this morning which left a section of the road exhibiting signs of a possible collapse,” read part of a statement from KeNHA .

Meanwhile, motorists have been rerouted to diversions within Timboroa area.

Closure of the busy Eldoret -Nakuru highway led to heavy traffic jam as KeNHA urged drivers to be careful.

“All road users are requested to exercise caution, avoid overlapping and follow directions from traffic marshals to ensure smooth flow of traffic,” KeNHA noted.

At the same time, the Authority emphasized that it was committed to ensure seamless connectivity to facilitate safe passage of goods and services.

The closure of the busy highway at Tmboroa comes a day after KeNHA announced a 12 hour closure of Kedong Ranch-Suswa road on May 1.

This was after heavy debris and silt  blocked the road, covering a distance of two kilometres caused by the ongoing heavy rains in the country.

“The Authority staff have been working tirelessly to clear the section. However, the continuous heavy rainfall has resulted in significant deposits of fresh silt and debris, rendering the road impassable,” KeNHA said.

Elsewhere in Nairobi, Enterprise road, Eastern and Thika bypasses were partially closed, rendered impassable on May 1, 2024 due to floods and the ongoing heavy rains.

This was after the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) issued a public warning on some roads in  Nairobi and Kiambu that have been declared partially impassible.

In a public notice, KURA explained that the roads in the two counties have been affected by floods as a result of the ongoing heavy rains  in the country.
