Kenya Airways has announced delays and cancellation of flights for all passengers due to the ongoing workers’ strike at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
The strike that officially kicked off on Wednesday September 11, 2024 disrupted normal schedule at the JKIA.
Staff at the JKIA airport went on a strike, protesting the takeover of Kenya’s main airport by Adani, the Indian Company.
“Dear valued customers, Kenya Airways would like to alert you that due to the action by some JKIA staff, this has resulted in some delays and possible cancellations of some of our flights for both departing and arriving passengers.
“We continue to observe the situation and will update you on the affected flights,” read part of KQ statement.
Since the strike kicked off officially at midnight no flight has left JKIA.
Long queues were witnessed as from Tuesday around 9 pm when the workers began their go-slow.
Meanwhile, the Kenya Airports Authority Acting Chief Executive Officer Henry Ogoye confirmed that the authority had received an investment proposal under the Public Private Partnerships from Adani Airport Holdings Limited.
Adani’s proposal, KAA explains, includes significant improvements to the passenger terminal building, runway, taxiway, and apron.
On Monday, The Law Society of Kenya and Kenya Human Rights Commission secured a delay of implementing the Adani deal, from the High Court, arguing that the agreement lacked transparency.
However, the government defended the agreement, stating that JKIA had exceeded its capacity of 7.5 million passengers annually and was in urgent need of upgrades.
