Kenya deepens economic ties and regional collaboration at Spring Meetings in Washington D.C.

Kenya has reaffirmed its commitment to both international partnerships and regional integration during a series of high engagement on the sidelines of IMF-World Bank Spring meetings in Washington DC.

National Treasury Principal Secretary Dr. Chris Kiptoo on Friday, April 25 morning held a bilateral talks with Birgit Pickel, Director-General for Africa at Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), reinforcing the long-standing relationship between Kenya and Germany.

The partnership, which dates back to 1964, has seen Germany provide over EUR 2.5 billion in financial and technical support through the Germany Development Bank (KfW) and GIZ (Technical Cooperation Agency).

This collaboration spans vital sectors, including climate and energy, agriculture, health, water and sanitation, and youth employment.

In the meeting both parties emphasized the need to boost project efficiency, agreeing on the importance of conducting regular portfolio reviews and joint filed missions with KfW to identify and address challenges and ensure timely delivery of projects .The Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya, Dr. Kamau Thugge also participated in this strategic discussion.

Meanwhile, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury and Economic Planning, John Mbadi, engaged in talks with his Rwandan counterpart, Yusuf Murangwa.

Their bilateral discussion preceded a high-level trilateral consultation involving Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda.

The meeting brought together key officials including Ramathan Ggoobi, Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Treasury of Uganda, Dr. Chris Kiptoo and other senior representatives.

The leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to accelerating regional infrastructure development as a driver of inclusive and sustainable economic growth. Central to their discussions was the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), a flagship infrastructure initiative jointly prioritized by the three East African Community (EAC) member states.

In addition the SGR is recognized as a cornerstone of the region’s integration agenda and is poised to enhance trade efficiency, promote seamless cross-border mobility, and unlock new opportunities for shared prosperity across the region.
