The Kenya Defence Forces soldiers are geared up for the second edition of the Africa Military Games taking place in Abuja, Nigeria.
The KDF will send 87 athletes to represent Kenya competing in athletics, shooting, judo, boxing, kickboxing, volleyball, and golf.
The theme for this year’s event will be “Enhancing military cooperation in Africa through sport.”
The first African Military Games were held in Nairobi, Kenya, between April 7 and 17, 2002. There’s no clear reason as to why the games were halted.
44 countries from Africa displayed interest in participating in the competition that looked to host all 54 countries.
Major General (Maj Gen) Bernard Waliaula, Director General of Defence National Security Industries (DG DNSI), officially flagged off the contingent representing KDF on Friday 15th November at the Defence Headquarters in Nairobi.
“This is a unique opportunity to demonstrate Kenya’s standing as a sports powerhouse and to strengthen military diplomacy. The KDF and the entire nation are counting on you to represent us with pride,” Bernard Waliaula said.
He emphasized to the team the importance of upholding KDF’s high standards of integrity, discipline, and sportsmanship throughout the competition.
Defence Headquarters’ Chief of Personnel, Brigadier Elijah Gatere, praised the team’s thorough preparation and thanked the Chief of the Defence Forces for his ongoing support, expressing confidence in their preparedness.
