Kenya deployed over 200 police officers to Haiti on Saturday January 18, 2025 to support a U.N.-backed mission addressing gang violence that has displaced over a million people.
Ten countries have pledged over 3,100 troops, but few have deployed.
Kenya sent 217 officers, adding to the 400 sent last year.
“Our commitment to this historic mission is unwavering, and we will continue to mobilize all the necessary international support for it to succeed,” said Interior cabinet secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.
Haitian President Fritz Alphonse Jean thanked Kenya for its support, promising to ensure the troops’ safety.
Deputy Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli urged Kenyan officers to remain vigilant and maintain high standards, highlighting prior successes against gangs.
Kenya had promised 1,000 officers for the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission, but Reuters reported some resignations due to pay delays and poor conditions.
However, the MSS denied resignations and confirmed salaries were paid.
Other contributing nations include Guatemala, El Salvador, Jamaica, and Belize.
