Kenya deploys additional contingent to Haiti in support of Multinational Security Mission

The Government of Kenya has deployed an additional contingent of 217 officers from the Rapid Deployment Unit, along with a specialized team comprising medical personnel, mechanics, communications officers, and other support staff, to Haiti.

This elite team joins the first contingent of 400 officers who arrived in Haiti in June 2024 as part of Kenya’s commitment to restoring security and stability in the Caribbean nation.

Following the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 2699 (2023), a Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission was authorized in Haiti, with Kenya serving as the lead nation in assisting the Haitian National Police (HNP) to combat criminal gang activities and restore order. Other officers have been drawn from Jamaica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Bahamas, and Belize.

The Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission and Haitian National Police have intensified joint efforts to reduce crime and violence, fostering a more secure environment.

The reopening of schools and colleges on October 2, 2024, and the subsequent reopening of courts on October 7, 2024, stand as milestones in Haiti’s path to stability, despite ongoing threats posed by gangs.

Civilian protection remains a key focus, with increased seizures of illicit drugs, arms, and ammunition, effectively cutting off major funding sources for the criminal groups. Major criminal gangs have been destabilized, including the Delmas 6 Gang, Kraze Barye Gang and the Gran Griff Gang led by criminals Jimmy Cherizier, Vitel Homme Innocent and Elan Luckson respectively.

MSS is providing crucial support to HNP in securing the Police Training School. A fast-tracked four month basic training program for 747 cadets commenced on August 27, 2024, culminating in their successful graduation on January 10, 2025.

The protection of children and educational institutions has also been prioritized, with continuous outreach programs aimed at discouraging gang affiliation and ensuring the safety of young learners.

The teams are actively engaging local communities through educational forums on responsible and lawful behavior, promoting cooperation between security agencies and civilians.Kenya recognizes the immense responsibility of peacekeeping and remains committed to fostering peace, stability, and security beyond its borders.

“We extend our profound gratitude to our officers and their families for the sacrifices they continue to make in the pursuit of global peace. With a distinguished record in international policing and peace support operations, Kenya’s National Police Service continues to demonstrate its capability and professionalism in executing the mission,” a statement from the Ministry of Interior reads. “As part of our unwavering commitment to the people of Haiti, Kenya will continue to deploy additional officers from various specialized units, including the General Service Unit (GSU), the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU), and the all-female Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT), to reinforce security efforts and ensure sustained progress in restoring order.”
