Kenya drops four places in the latest FIFA rankings following defeats in the AFCON qualifiers

Kenya’s national football team, the Harambee Stars, has fallen four places in the latest FIFA World Rankings, now positioned at 106th globally.

This drop follows back-to-back defeats against Cameroon in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers, which have left Kenya’s hopes of qualification hanging by a thread.

Kenya suffered a 4-1 loss in Yaoundé, followed by a 1-0 defeat in the return leg held in Uganda, bringing their AFCON qualification campaign into serious doubt.

Regional and African Rankings

Despite the slip, Kenya remains the second-highest-ranked team in East Africa, trailing behind Uganda, who rose three places to claim the 87th position. Sudan made significant progress, jumping ten places to 110th, while Tanzania sits at 112th.

On the continental level, Morocco continues to dominate, ranking 13th globally and leading the African standings. They are followed by Senegal (20th) and Egypt (30th).

Global Top 10 Rankings

The global rankings remain tight at the top, with Argentina holding onto the #1 spot, though their lead over France (2nd) and Spain (3rd) has slightly narrowed. England (4th), Brazil (5th), and Belgium (6th) maintain their positions. Portugal (7th, up 1) and Italy (9th, up 1) are the only teams to move up within the top ten, while Netherlands (8th, down 1) and Colombia (10th, down 1) complete the group. Germany (11th, up 2) is now in close contention to break into the top ten.

Kenya’s AFCON Hopes and Path Forward

In the previous month’s rankings, Kenya was positioned at 102 and seemed poised to break into the top 100. However, the defeats to the five-time African champions, Cameroon, have erased this progress.

Despite the setbacks, Coach Engin Firat remains optimistic about turning things around. He is now focusing on securing crucial victories in the upcoming qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Namibia, which could revitalize Kenya’s chances of making it to AFCON 2025. Success in these matches will also be critical for the November FIFA Rankings, potentially allowing Kenya to climb back up the global standings.
