Kenya: Floods kill 10 as over 3,000 households are displaced

Ten people have been confirmed dead due to ongoing heavy rains and flooding in different parts of the country while over 3,000 households have been displaced.

Confirming the numbers on Tuesday December 3, 2024, Ministry of Interior principal secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo said Kisumu county is the worst hit by flooding.

“While the rains are expected to subside soon, we must remain vigilant and adhere to government safety directives.

“This includes avoiding hazardous zones including dams, roads and bridges deemed unsafe and following evacuation notices,” said Dr Raymond Omollo.

Omollo also revealed that the government is mulling a PPP for the construction of the Soin Koru dam as a measure to address flooding in Kisumu County.

He also urged citizens to embrace such PPP initiatives and desist from opposing everything during public participation.

Kisumu County women Rep on the other hand challenged the government to find a lasting solution to the floods problem even if it means  using PPPs to do dam construction.

She urged the broad based government to equip evacuation areas with medical camps and fastrack long-term measures such as construction of dykes and de-siltation of Lake Victoria.

The leaders spoke after visiting flood affected areas in Kisumu and Busia Counties.
