Kenya Kwanza divisions worsen as Moses Kuria hints at Gachagua impeachment

Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria on Saturday June 15, 2024 shared a cryptic message targeting Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, pointing at a looming impeachment motion.

In a statement posted on his X account, Kuria disclosed a looming impeachment, without directly mentioning a specific target.

However, the majority of Kenyans interpreted Kuria’s message as an impeachment motion to be tabled against the deputy president, following alleged deepening divisions in the Kenya Kwanza government.

“Impeachment loading….,” Kuria posted on X.

This was after the Public Service CS slammed the Deputy President over his perceived wrangles with President William Ruto.

At the same time, Kenyans who commented on Kuria’s tweet suggested that the Public Service CS targeted the deputy president.

Meanwhile, some Kenyans explained on social media that an impeachment motion against Gachagua may make the president lose many votes in the Mount Kenya region.

“Impeach Rigathi and you will ensure that Ruto will be a one term President and y’all going down with him,” Lydia posted, in response to Kuria.

“I have come to realise that in fighting for Kikuyus, your toughest opponent is a fellow Kikuyu. Kikuyus don’t love each other,” another person posted.

In addition, CS Kuria shared an August 2023 video where the Deputy President had mocked him for arriving late at an event convened by the President.

At the time, the Public Service CS had been asked by the President to show cause why he had arrived late for the performance signing contract event held at State House, Nairobi.

Divisions within the ruling party intensified after the deputy president supported the ‘one-man, one-vote, one-shilling’ revenue sharing proposal during the Limuru III meeting.

As a result, President William Ruto’s allies criticized Gachagua, accusing him of promoting tribalism and referred to him as a villager.

“The largest problem in Kenya is tribalism. There are some people who never go beyond their village and he wants to be a leader,” said Kuria during an event in Nyeri on June 15, 2024.
