The National Women’s Rugby team, Lionesses, have landed in Cape Town, South Africa, ahead of the first leg of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Challenger series.
Tournament Draw and Pool Standings
The Lionesses, who have been training at RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi, are placed in Pool D alongside Poland and Samoa, teams they have previously faced in past series.
Other pool allocations:
- Pool A: South Africa (hosts), Czechia, Hong Kong
- Pool B: Thailand, Mexico, Argentina
- Pool C: Uganda, Belgium, Colombia
Pool winners will advance to the semi-finals, while second-placed teams will compete for 5th to 8th places. Teams finishing last in their pools will battle for 9th to 12th positions.
Coach’s Confidence in the Squad
Lionesses head coach David Mwanja expressed confidence in his squad, commending their hard work and preparation.
“The girls have been working hard in training, and I am confident they will put in the work on the field. This is a talented and resilient group, and I believe they are ready for the task ahead,” he said.
Tournament Schedule and Road to Los Angeles
Cape Town will host the first two legs of the tournament:
- First Leg: March 1st – 2nd, 2025
- Second Leg: March 7th – 8th, 2025
The top eight ranked teams will then advance to the final tournament in Krakow, Poland, in April. The top four men’s and women’s teams across all three rounds will qualify for the HSBC Sevens Playoff in Los Angeles in May 2025.
