The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) has issued an immediate closure notice for Body By Design Kenya, which operates under Omnicare Medical, citing serious health and safety violations under CAP 253 of the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act.
The notice, issued on October 31, 2024, follows allegations of botched cosmetic procedures that reportedly led to fatalities, sparking widespread public outrage.
The closure came amid growing concern on social media about the clinic’s practices.
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, alongside concerned residents, stormed Body by Design’s Nairobi offices this week, calling for answers after multiple reports surfaced about botched cosmetic surgeries allegedly resulting in death.
Speaking to reporters outside the facility, Sonko urged the KMPDC to take action.
“It is all over social media—people accusing this entity of botched cosmetic surgeries. Where is KMPDC? Let them investigate these claims and provide clarity to the public,” Sonko said.
The recent death of a woman, reportedly following a cosmetic procedure at the clinic, has only intensified public scrutiny. Sonko claims his office has received multiple appeals from grieving families demanding accountability.
The KMPDC’s suspension means Omnicare Medical must remain closed until it can provide proof of compliance and receives a formal reinstatement from the Council.
The KMPDC’s closure order was prompted by three major violations:
1. Operating Without Proper Licensing: The facility was found to be unlawfully operating as a health institution without the required license, violating section 15 (1) of CAP 253.
2. Employment of Unlicensed Practitioners: It was discovered that Omnicare Medical was employing or engaging services of medical practitioners without valid licenses, violating section 22 (4).
3. Failure to Meet Required Health Standards: The facility reportedly operated below the mandated health standards for medical facilities, posing a threat to public safety.
With public pressure mounting, the KMPDC is now expected to provide a comprehensive investigation to address growing fears over the safety of medical procedures at such facilities.
