Kenya Railways suspends all commuter train services

Kenya Railways on Wednesday April 24, 2024 temporarily suspended commuter train services in Nairobi due to the ongoing heavy rains that have affected rail lines.

In a press statement, Kenya Railways noted that it considered safety of customers while suspending the commuter train services. 

“We wish to notify members of the public that commuter train services have been temporarily suspended due to the ongoing heavy rains that have affected the rail lines.

“We are compelled to take these precautionary measures because the safety of our customers is always of paramount importance to us,” read part of Kenya Railways statement.

In addition, the government agency explained that it will notify Kenyans once normal services resume.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) had also announced the closure of some roads in Nairobi due to the ongoing heavy rains.

Kura listed six roads including Aerodrome Road, Kapenguria Road, UN Avenue – Runda, Kasarani Mwiki Road at Mwiki Bridge.

“Motorists are also warned of flooding along Mombasa Road at Cabanas, Thika Road at Githurai/ Kahawa bridge.

“The traffic police and our technical team are on the ground to direct traffic and enhance the safety of Motorists. We shall keep you posted as the situation unfolds,” Kura stated.

At the same time, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) also alerted Kenyans about certain roads that were impassable in different parts of the country due to flooding. 

“KeNHA advises the public of a severe traffic disruption along the Oltepesi – Magadi Road. The road section has flooded rendering it impassable. 

“Motorists are urged to either avoid this route altogether or exercise extreme caution if travel is unavoidable,” KeNHA stated.

The government agency had also issued an alert over flooding at some sections along Thika Road. 

“Following heavy downpour last night and continuing this morning, traffic disruptions have occurred in some sections of the Thika Superhighway as follows:

“Juja underpass. Traffic snarl up begins at Juja mall, both on the highway and service lane. Motorists are advised to use service lane at Exit 14 & 15 until the water subsides,” KeNHA noted in a statement posted on X.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Meteorological Department had issued a statement, disclosing that the heavy rains will continue over the next seven days in the country.
