The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Annual General Meeting (AGM) has been postponed for 30 days to allow mediation over internal disputes within the board.
This decision follows a directive by the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT), which emphasized the need for resolution through dialogue before proceeding with key agenda items.
The meeting, which was initially scheduled to address crucial governance matters, was adjourned after a proposal by Kisumu RFC treasurer Erick Ondieki.
He cited ongoing conflicts within the board, arguing that holding the AGM under the current circumstances would not be beneficial.
His proposal was backed by Homeboyz RFUEA chair Oscar Mango, who underscored the importance of allowing the mediation process to take place.
Following a majority vote in favor of the postponement, KRU chair Alexander ‘Sasha’ Mutai adjourned the meeting, setting a deadline of 30 days for its resumption.
The leadership wrangles within the KRU board have been a point of contention, with Mutai and Secretary General Ray Olendo at the center of the dispute.
Earlier this month, an emergency board meeting resulted in Mutai’s suspension. However, he dismissed the suspension as unprocedural and malicious. The SDT later overturned the decision, reinstating him pending further deliberation.
In an effort to broker peace within the union, the SDT appointed Senior Counsel John Ohaga to lead the mediation process. Ohaga is expected to submit his report on April 2, outlining the progress of the talks and potential resolutions.
Monday’s AGM was initially expected to deliberate on several key issues, including a motion of no confidence against Mutai. However, the SDT’s ruling last Thursday barred such discussions until mediation is concluded.
With the AGM now on hold, all eyes will be on the mediation process and whether it will foster unity within the union ahead of the rescheduled meeting.
