Kenya Rugby Union chairman bullish ahead of Shujaa’s assignment in Australia

The Kenya national men’s rugby sevens team, Shujaa, is set to begin their campaign in the Perth edition of the World Rugby Sevens Series this weekend, kicking off on Friday, January 24, 2024.

Having rejoined the World Series after a year-long hiatus, Shujaa faces a formidable challenge in Pool C against rugby heavyweights Uruguay, New Zealand, and Fiji.

Shujaa’s Journey to Perth
The team landed in Australia on Sunday after weeks of intensive residential training in Nakuru, where they honed their skills and prepared mentally for the high-stakes tournament.

Pool C Opponents

  • Fiji: The series leaders with 36 points, renowned for their dominance in past rounds.
  • New Zealand: Sitting sixth in the standings with 24 points, the All Blacks 7s are known for their physical and fast-paced style.
  • Uruguay: Close rivals to Kenya in the standings, sitting 10th with 6 points. This clash could be pivotal in shaping Shujaa’s campaign.

Shujaa currently holds ninth place with 11 points, a position they are eager to improve on during the Perth 7s.

Optimism from Kenya Rugby Union
Kenya Rugby Union Chairman Sasha Mutai expressed confidence in the team’s preparations and potential to deliver strong performances.

“It’s good news that the team arrived safely in Australia. They are in high spirits and ready to deliver a great performance. I believe they have what it takes to compete against the best,” said Mutai.

He also praised the team’s energy and teamwork, adding, “It’s a tough pool, but Shujaa belongs among the top 12 teams in the series. They are young, focused, and ready to give their best.”

Storied Rivalries in Pool C
Shujaa shares a history of memorable encounters with their Pool C opponents:

  • Fiji: A perennial giant in sevens rugby, Fiji has consistently challenged Kenya.
  • New Zealand: Their physicality and speed make them tough competitors.
  • Uruguay: As close rivals in the standings, this match could be crucial for securing points.

One standout moment in 2024 saw Shujaa deliver a thrilling 19-12 comeback victory over Fiji at the Cape Town 7s, despite being down to six men. Performances like these highlight Kenya’s resilience and potential to upset the sport’s elite.

Vincent Onyala and Brian Tanga return to the Shujaa squad

Head coach Kevin Wambua made two key additions to the team bringing back two players. Returning from injury are Vincent Onyala and Brian Tanga, both of whom bring experience and leadership to the squad.

“Having the boys in one place focusing on training brought us together. The addition of Onyala and Tanga strengthens the squad significantly, both in leadership and gameplay.” Said Wambua.

Shujaa started their World Series campaign in Dubai, finishing 10th and earning 3 points. They showed significant improvement in Cape Town, reaching the Cup quarterfinals. Although they lost 14-26 to Argentina in the 5th place semifinal, they bounced back with a convincing 32-17 win over Great Britain in the 7th place playoff.
