Kenya Space Agency probes rocket debris found in Makueni

The Kenya Space Agency (KSA) has confirmed that a metallic object that recently landed in Mukuku Village, Makueni County was part of a rocket.

In a statement, KSA disclosed that such objects, typically measuring around 2.5 meters in diameter and weighing approximately 500 kilograms, are engineered to either burn up upon re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere or descend over uninhabited areas like oceans.

Following reports of the incident, KSA officials, in collaboration with local authorities, swiftly secured the scene and retrieved the debris for further analysis.

Preliminary findings indicate that the object’s origin will be determined through detailed investigations.

“This is an isolated case, which the Agency will investigate and address using the established framework under international space law,” KSA noted.

The agency lauded Mukuku residents for promptly reporting the incident and cooperating with authorities to ensure public safety.
