Kenya wheelchair boxing team shines in World Paralympics in Poland

Kenya wheelchair boxing team has emerged number 2 in World Paralympic boxing competition in Poland. The team headed by their President of para-boxing team in Kenya Mary Atieno emerged number 2 in 3 categories.

Evans Odhiambo Absalom won gold in Heavyweight catergory while Emmanuel Yakavi gored got in Lightweight category.

Speaking to the Media Mary Atieno reiterated that the team was able to perform due to support from well-wishers.

“We are happy that we were able to represent Kenya internationally and we emerged number 2 winning gold in 2 categories,” she reiterated.

Overall, the team won the trophy for being the most disciplined team.

In March, the team got a reprieve after former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko visited them after pleading with well-wishers to address the needs and challenges faced by disabled.

Sonko paid for their visas, competition uniform and accommodation. He further gave them training kitty including globes punching bags and wheelchairs.

“Sonko’s intervention came in handy we were able to train with the equipment bought, also the Sports Ministry helped us by sorting accommodation locally,” Atieno confirmed.

In the competition, Poland emerged number one with six teams competing.

The team jetted back yesterday.
