Kenya to host the 2027 Grannies Football World Cup

Kenya has officially secured the hosting rights for the third edition of the Grannies International Football Tournament, set for 2027. The announcement follows a thrilling conclusion to the 2025 edition held in Limpopo, South Africa, where over 20 teams from nine countries showcased talent, energy, and passion, proving that age is no barrier to sport.

The tournament, founded by South African humanitarian Rebecca Ntsanwisi, has grown rapidly since its inaugural edition in 2023. “I am thrilled to bring it to Kenya in 2027,” said Ntsanwisi. She will visit Kenya for two months in August and September.

Kenya’s Mutei Grannies FC played well, winning two games, tying one, and losing one. They did not make it to the final rounds, but they showed great spirit.

Team captain Getrude Mutai was top scorer with three goals. Talaa Kaino, 88, was the oldest player and won many hearts.

“We are so happy to play here. For many of us, this was our first trip on a plane. South Africa is a dream,” said Rebecca Cheboi, a 75-year-old midfield player, with a big smile.

Kenya Grannies Football boss Elizabeth Keitany praised the team’s work and thanked the Sports Ministry. “We trained for just six months and faced teams with years of play. We have great promise,” she said.

Lucy Njoroge, the sports minister of Uasin Gishu County, thanked the leaders, like President Ruto, Sports CS Salim Mvurya, and Governor Jonathan Bii, for their help. “This event helps our grannies both in body and in income,” she said.

The Kenyan team will return home on Sunday at 10 PM, proud and ready to host a grand event in 2027.
