Kenya beat Ukraine 1-0 to advance to the semifinals of the inaugural WAFF Women’s World Cup in Colombia.
The Kenya women’s Amputee team has won their quarterfinal game against Ukraine to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
Anjejo Angeline Atieno scored the winning goal just 1 minute and 58 seconds into the game, and the ladies held on to win the game.
They continued their impressive run after a 1-0 win to England to finish first in the group stage.
Other teams proceeding to the semis are the USA, the hosts Colombia, and Poland.
Brazil beat Haiti 2-0 in the 9th place game while the USA knocked out England after a 2-1 victory through penalty shootouts.
The host Colombia also proceeds to the quarterfinals after a 4-0 win over Peru.
The competition’s only African representatives, Kenya, are still undefeated and representing their continent with pride.
“Congratulations, Kenya Women’s National Amputee Football Team. It’s coming home,” said Jonathan Metet, a disability inclusion champion. “Disability is not inability. Let’s give persons with disabilities equal opportunities as a right and not a favor.”
Seeing the Ukrainian team celebrate after their exit from the competition was heartwarming. The women were so proud to be there and to feel represented in the first-ever women’s amputee World Cup.
