Kenyan Amari Otieno named Leicester City’s U21 player of the year

Kenyan English winger Thomas Amari Otieno has received recognition among the brightest prospects in Leicester City’s youth setup as he clinched the Men’s Development Squad Player of the Season award.

The prestigious event, held at the King Power Stadium, celebrated the achievements of both the men’s and women’s teams of the club.

The 19-year-old midfielder, who plies his trade with the Under-21 squad, showcased exceptional form throughout April with Leicester City PL2, earning him a nomination for the Premier League 2 awards for the month.

Notably, he has netted five goals for the Under-21s in Premier League 2 this season and earned a call-up to the first-team squad for the Emirates FA Cup clash against Birmingham City.

Otieno’s journey began at Carshalton Athletic, where he spent two seasons before catching the eye of a Chelsea scout. This led to an invitation to a summer camp and eventually a place in the academy.

His performances in the UEFA Youth League, making six appearances and contributing a goal and three assists, highlighted his potential. Additionally, he found the back of the net in the FA Youth Cup before making the switch to Leicester City.

Currently, Leicester City sits 20th in the 26-team league, having amassed 20 points from 20 matches, with the standings subject to change based on results elsewhere.

The team is set to venture to Hong Kong next month to compete in the HKFC Soccer Sevens tournament.
