The Kenyan Embassy in Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), is among the consulates that were Tuesday, January 28 attacked by protesters voicing their discontent on the ongoing conflict in the country’s east.
The demonstrators also targeted embassies of Uganda, Rwanda, France, and the United States, countries they accuse of complicity in Rwanda’s support of M23 rebels, who have since captured Goma, the eastern DRC capital.
Police were forced to fire teargas to disperse the protesters. According to Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei, Kenya is “deeply concerned” by the ongoing siege and attacks on embassy premises and personnel.
“This development is a serious breach of international law and we condemn it in the strongest terms possible,” PS Sing’Oei says, calling on authorities in DRC to “take appropriate action.”
Kenya, PS Sing’Oei affirms, stands with the DRC during this challenging time and “will use all diplomatic means within its disposal to work with the rest of the region in the search for peace.”
He has since implored Kenyan citizens and businesspersons living in DRC to exercise caution during this period.
“All of this is because of Rwanda. What Rwanda is doing is in complicity with France, Belgium, the United States and others. The people of Congo are tired. How many times should we die?” a protester told Reuters.
