Kenyan professional golfers have received a significant boost ahead of the Kenya Railway Golf Club leg of the PGK Classic tournament, thanks to a KES 200,000 cash sponsorship from leading sports agency IMG Kenya Limited.
The sponsorship, aimed at fostering the growth and development of professional golf in Kenya, follows a similar financial injection by IMG Kenya in January ahead of the 2025 Magical Kenya Open. The Railway leg of the PGK Classic teed off at 7:30 am today, featuring 28 pro golfers competing in a one-round contest as part of the Professional Golfers of Kenya (PGK) series designed to keep players competitive.
With a total prize purse of KES 400,000, the tournament will see the overall winner take home KES 72,000—18 percent of the purse. Among the prominent golfers participating in the event are Njoroge Kibugu, Greg Snow, Dismas Indiza, C.J. Wangai, Nelson Mundayi, David Wakhu, Erick Ooko, Samuel Njoroge, Jastas Madoya, and Mutahi Kibugu.

Strategic Support for Kenyan Professional Golf
IMG Kenya Limited CEO Peter Gacheru emphasized the company’s long-term vision in supporting professional golf, saying:
“We are on a journey with the PGK to sustainably grow the profile of professional golf in Kenya by ensuring our pro golfers actively participate in competitive tournaments that enhance their skills and raise the overall quality of the game.
“Our contribution, which follows similar support to the PGK in January, is part of our broader strategy to help Kenyan golfers compete at regional and international levels. We remain committed to working closely with the PGK and other stakeholders to make this a reality.”
PGK Chairman John Wangai expressed gratitude for the sponsorship and called on more organizations to support local events:
“We are grateful to IMG for backing this event and encourage more partners to come on board. These tournaments are crucial for keeping our professionals in peak form and preparing them for regional and global competitions.”
Need for More Competitive Play
The Railway leg of the PGK Classic is the first local pro tournament following the 2025 Magical Kenya Open, where Windsor Golf Club’s Riz Charania finished as the top Kenyan, tying for 93rd place. The result reignited calls from local professionals for more tournaments to sharpen their skills and improve their competitiveness on the global stage.
As Kenyan golfers strive to make an impact in international circuits, continued support from sponsors and more frequent competitions remain key to their development.
