A Kenyan police officer in the ongoing Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti was shot and injured on Tuesday March 18, 2025 during a security operation in Port-au-Prince.
According to an official report, the Kenyan police officer was shot by criminal gangs while conducting a security operation in Kenscoff, within the Belot area.
The mission spokesman Jack Ombaka said that the officer was promptly evacuated to ASPEN Level 2 Hospital, where he is receiving medical attention and is in stable condition.
“He is in stable condition and we are pursuing the gang behind the shooting,” Ombaka stated without disclosing the name of the injured officer.
This is a second case of a Kenyan police officer to be shot during the ongoing Haiti mission.
Less than a month ago, on February 23, a Kenyan officer, Constable Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai died after gangs fatally shot him in the western Segur-Savien region.
Samuel Tompoi was the first Kenyan to be killed during the mission, which began deploying in June 2024.
Kaetuai died of a single shot to his head, an autopsy on his body showed.
Kenya has deployed at least 800 police officers under a United Nations backed MSS mission to Haiti, to help in combating gangs.
Jamaica, Guatemala and El Salvador have also deployed troops to help Haiti’s national police in fighting criminal gangs.
Meanwhile, Inspector General of the National Police Service Douglas Kanja had led senior officers in visiting and condoling with the family and friends of Kaetuai.
The officers visited the family at Naserian Village, Kajiado East Sub-County, Kajiado County, as they mourned his demise.
