A Kenyan Citizen was arrested in Mumbai, India at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport with 1.4 kilograms of cocaine.

The Kenyan passenger was arrested at an international airport in India for allegedly smuggling cocaine valued at Ksh8 million.

She had arrived in India via a Kenya Airways flight from Nairobi on December 28 before she was intercepted by  Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officers.

Security personnel have launched investigations into the matter, with an aim of dismantling the international drugs cartels.

According to DRI officers, the security officers who were acting on intelligence information, singled out the Kenyan woman and recovered cocaine from her luggage.

This was not the first time for a Kenyan national to be arrested abroad in drug related cases.

For instance, in June 2023, a Kenyan woman was arrested at the New Delhi airport in India for allegedly smuggling 2.5 kilograms of cocaine from Addis Ababa.

A similar incident was reported on September 24, 2023 where a Kenyan car dealer was arrested in Sri Lanka at the Bandaranaike International Airport with 4 kilograms of cocaine.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the arrest of Kenyans with cocaine abroad is an indicator that Kenya is a major transit route for narcotics to Asia and European countries.

The DCI detectives also disclosed that the government of Kenya should put in place strict measures to stop smuggling of narcotics in the country.
