The Campus Activation held at the Technical University of Kenya marked a significant milestone in empowering youth to take a proactive role in the fight against GBV and femicide.
The event brought together youth leaders, activists, and key stakeholders to discuss actionable strategies for meaningful youth engagement in addressing these critical issues.
Prof.Omondi Oketch,Dean of Students at Technical University of Kenya highlighted the essential role of university students in leading awareness campaigns and advocating for social change.He called on youth to leverage their platforms to inspire action within their communities.
A key highlight of the event was the Tubonge Session, where young people shared innovative ideas on preventing GBV. Diana Mwatila from the Gender Mainstreaming Committee at the Ministry of Youth Affairs Creative Economy and sports encouraged youth to engage in self-education, speak up, use social media for awareness, and offer support to survivors
She urged victims to report within 72 hours to access counseling, treatment, and gather evidence.
The National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) Director Viridiana Wasike urged the young people to take a stand against GBV and say no to violence. She emphasized understanding the different forms of GBV and creating supportive environments for victims.
Mr. George Osaso, Chair of the National Youth Council (NYC) Elections Steering Committee, informed the youth about the upcoming NYC elections and underscored the importance of youth participation in elections to strengthen leadership and policies aimed at GBV prevention.
The event concluded with a call to action from Ms. Annabelle Shikanda, a member of the NYC Youth Advisory Board, urging youth to amplify their voice and unite in the fight against all forms of GBV in their communities.
In her closing remarks, NYC Ag. CEO Gloria Wawira, reaffirmed NYC’s commitment to empowering youth in combating GBV and femicide. She expressed gratitude to partners, National Government Affirmative Action Fund and AICS, for their continued support.. and encouraged youth to remain engaged by sharing their views and drive efforts towards a violence-free society.
