The executive committee of the Confederation of African Football is set to cast their votes today on the Pamoja bid for hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Kenya Joined hands with her neighbors Uganda and Tanzania to bid for the hosting right to the continental show piece.
This awaited announcement comes at the back of the closure of Kenya’s flagship stadium Kasarani , Nyayo and the Kipchoge Keino stadium for renovation in preparation for CAF’s decision on the joint bid.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba had also indicated that the government also plans to build a new Talanta Stadium
CAF Online reported that the confederation’s President Patrice Motsepe will announce the results of a significant decision-making meeting in Cairo, Egypt.
This meeting will reveal the fate of the bidding nations, including Botswana, Senegal, Morocco, Algeria, and the collaborative “Pamoja” bid from three East African nations.
However in the eve of the announcement Algeria pulled out its candidacy to hold the 2025 and 2027 finals.
The country’s federation attributed the decision to the new approach in the management of football in the country.
“The FAF will now focus its efforts on the reorganisation and revitalisation of football in Algeria, as it reiterates its unwavering commitment to the development of African football.
“On this occasion, the FAF extends its sincere thanks to the great family of African football for the understanding of its decision which in no way signifies a disengagement of Algeria from the king of sport on the continent,” the statement on the Algeria Football Federation read.
The East African region has seen a surge in soccer enthusiasm, with prominent clubs like Tanzania’s Simba, Yanga, and Uganda’s Vipers challenging continental powerhouses such as Egypt’s Al Ahly and DR Congo’s TP Mazembe, among others.
Additionally, national teams like Tanzania’s Taifa Stars held Algeria to a goalless draw, and Kenya’s Harambee Stars secured a 2-1 away victory against the Qatari national team earlier this month.
