Kenyans react to YouTube charging iPhone users in dollars and Android users in shillings

YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium have expanded their availability in Africa, making their official debut in Kenya.

However, most Kenyans are intrigued as to why iPhone users will pay for the services in American dollars while Android users pay in Kenyan shillings.

According to an update on X by Google Africa, the price range on YouTube Premium is different depending on the phone operating system.

Kenyans make fun of YouTube

For those using iOS on iPhone, the pricing is in American dollars, and those using Android will pay in Kenyan shillings.

Kenyans were quick to note the details on payment and shared their thoughts on the disparity.

“Android guys getting billed in KES, iOS guys in USD” Wex stated.

“What about Android peeps who study at USIU? I wonder..” Martin shared.
“People think being scammed and overpaying is a show of class” Mintencodes commented.

YouTube Premium in Kenya

Consequently, The announcement, made by Google Africa on Wednesday, December 6, detailed the subscription plans for users in Kenya.

Individual users in Kenya can access ad-free viewing, background play, and offline video downloads for Ksh.499 on Android and $4.99 on iOS.

Families have the option to choose the premium family plan at Ksh.949 on Android and $9.49 on iOS.

YouTube Premium includes YouTube Music Premium, offering subscribers access to over 100 million ad-free songs.

Packages on Premium

A key feature of premium is, that it also offers the option to play music even when the screen is locked.

Background play is enabled by default for the streaming app, the music app, and the kids’ version.

This allows videos to keep playing in the background when users leave the app to open other apps.

With the subscription, users can download content for offline enjoyment for up to 30 days without an internet connection.

Moreover, canceling memberships is also a straightforward process through the Paid Membership page.
