‘Kenyans sent me Ksh168,000 to confirm my number, where do I take the money?’ -MP Kimani Kuria

Molo member of parliament (MP), who is also the National Assembly Finance Committee Chairperson Kuria Kimani has disclosed that he received Ksh168,000 from Kenyans, who were confirming his phone number.

Speaking on Wednesday June 19, 2024 while tabling the Finance Bill 2024 in parliament for a second reading, the Molo MP asked for advice on what to do with the money received from Kenyans.

At the same time, the MP asked National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula for advice, pointing out that receiving public money was illegal.

“In a very special way, although these people bridged the Data Protection Act by sharing our numbers with Kenyans, but I also thank the Kenyans who wrote to us through SMS that called us and some of them were generous enough to send us Ksh1 and more to confirm if our numbers were authentic,” he stated.

“I have written to the clerk wondering what to do with the Ksh168,000 that was sent to me because receiving these gifts from members of the public is against the laws of this Republic,” he added.

MP Kimani also said that after the morning session, he would consult Speaker Wetangula for advice on what to do with the money.

He clarified why he still had the money by saying, “I tried reversing it, but it was impossible because it came in hundreds of thousands.”

Mumias East MP, Peter Salasya, had previously disclosed that he was given Ksh40,000 in the same means.

In contrast to Kuria, the first-term Mumias East MP chose to use the funds on Sunday, June 16, at a church fundraiser in Kakamega County.
