President William Ruto on Thursday August 15, 2024 officially awarded a city charter to Eldoret town, making it Kenya’s fifth city.
This was during a ceremony that was held at the Eldoret Sports Club in Eldoret town.
During the ceremony, a seal of the Republic of Kenya was installed, followed by a procession involving speakers of county assemblies.
At the same time, Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii appointed a nine-member board to run the city.
In addition, President Ruto handed over the city charter to Governor Bii, increasing the country’s cities to five after Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu and Nakuru.
On Thursday morning, Ruto visited the county headquarters for a brief ceremony before riding through the town on the way to the Eldoret Sports Club where the event took place.
